Decide what the light needs to do.

General light

Plan the overall illumination for using and moving around the room. Consider daylight, surfaces, furniture and how you will switch or dim the lighting.

Task light

Place useful light where you read, cook, study or get ready. Check shadows and reflections from the position in which you will use it.

Accent light

Use a controlled highlight for artwork, a textured surface or a display. Check the beam and glare instead of adding more fixtures by default.

These roles can work together. A decorative fixture describes appearance; it still needs an appropriate light source and output. See Crompton’s lighting-type overview for further context.

Compare the specification, not just the watts.

  • Output and power: compare the stated lumens alongside watts. Wattage alone does not tell you how bright two different products will appear.
  • Light appearance: check colour temperature and colour-rendering information, then view a sample with your actual materials where possible.
  • Distribution: review the beam, diffuser and shielding. Consider glare, shadows and reflections from normal viewing positions.
  • Controls: confirm the lamp, driver, dimmer, remote, app or smart-home system are compatible. Do not assume every LED is dimmable.
  • Fit and setting: check the base or fitting, cut-out, mounting depth and the manufacturer’s suitability for the intended indoor or outdoor location.
  • Life and support: compare the product’s rated life and stated conditions separately from the warranty. Ask about replacement lamps, LED modules and drivers.
  • Complete cost: include required lamps, drivers, track, controls, mounting parts, delivery and installation in the quotation.

Ask the installer to review the product instructions and site conditions. Do not cut ceilings or order track components from a generic size assumption.

Questions before buying lighting.

Which lighting brand is best for my home?

Compare models for the actual room and task, including output, appearance, controls, installation and support. The right product cannot be established from the brand name alone.

Will every LED last 50,000 hours?

No universal lifespan is promised here. Use the exact product’s stated life, test conditions and warranty. These are different pieces of information.

Does an LED automatically mean lower bills?

Compare power consumption for the output you need and the time the light is used. Your saving depends on what it replaces, usage and the electricity tariff; a fixed percentage does not apply to every purchase.

Can I connect any LED to a dimmer?

Confirm that the light source and driver support dimming and that the selected control is compatible. Ask for a demonstrated combination before buying.

Should I use indirect lighting everywhere?

Indirect light can support general or decorative illumination, but tasks may need more directed light. Review the whole room rather than relying on one lighting method.

How should I maintain a fixture?

Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and servicing instructions. Check access for cleaning and replacement before choosing a fitting for a high ceiling or concealed location.
