Year 1
Sketching
Practise drawing to explain an idea clearly: a room, a material joint or a detail someone needs to understand on site.
30X40 Design Workshop
FreeA practising architect who films his own sketching, model-making and design process. Start with his sketching videos, then the model-making playlist. American practice, so ignore the licensing and contract content — the hand skills transfer completely.

ArchDaily’s roundup of drawing tutorials
FreeA short curated list of channels that teach architectural linework, hatching and quick perspective. Useful as a map so you are not lost in YouTube search results.
ArchDaily
Seven free architectural drawing tutorials
FreeUrban sketching and perspective basics from working illustrators. These are the free tutorials on the site — the full courses are paid, and you do not need them yet.
Domestika blog
Practice: sketch a building for ten minutes, then sketch one junction between materials. Compare both drawings with what you can actually observe.
Year 2
Learning with AI
Use AI to support reading, drafting and questioning. Keep the original sources close and check important facts yourself.
NotebookLM
Check current planUse your own notes and reference material to ask questions and follow source citations. Check answers against the original documents: AI output can contain mistakes, including when discussing building rules.
Google’s free year for students
Eligibility appliesGoogle’s August 2026 announcement describes a year of an AI plan at no cost for eligible students. Check the current offer for your country, verification requirements, deadline and renewal terms before claiming it.
Claude
Check current planUse it to draft, revise or question your design rationale. Verify factual claims and citations independently, and review the current usage limits.
Anthropic
Gemini and ChatGPT
Check current planUse AI assistants to explore questions and draft ideas. Check factual answers against original sources, especially building regulations and local requirements.

Project of the Week
FreeCompleted Indian homes walked through room by room, with the reasoning behind each decision and what it cost. Watch these the way you would do a case study — note what was compromised and why.
Houme India
Appliance and material buying guides
FreeChimneys, finishes, hardware. This is the part college never teaches — how to read a spec sheet and tell a real difference from a marketing difference. You will use this in your first client meeting.
Houme India
SketchUp Free
FreeRuns in the browser, nothing to install. Fastest way to model a kitchen or a wardrobe and check whether the shutter actually opens. Free version is for non-commercial use only, which is fine for college work.

National Building Code of India 2016
Archive referenceThis link is an archive reference for the 2016 code. Confirm the volume, edition, amendments and locally applicable requirements with authoritative sources before using it in a project. AI summaries do not replace reading the relevant provisions.
Bureau of Indian Standards, via Internet Archive

Year 4
Revit and BIM
Learn how building information modelling connects drawings, model information and coordination. Practise one complete example before adding complexity.
Revit, free for one year
Student eligibilityAutodesk offers eligible students and educators one-year educational access, renewable while eligible. Check Autodesk’s verification process and permitted educational uses before downloading.

Blender Foundation
Year 5
Soft skills
Practise explaining a design to someone unfamiliar with the vocabulary. Make the purpose and main trade-offs easy to follow.
Watch how a design gets explained
FreeNot for the design content this time. Watch Sourabh explaining a decision to a homeowner who does not know the vocabulary — the order he puts things in, what he leaves out, how he handles the budget question. That is the actual skill.
Houme India
How a small practice actually runs
FreeExplore resources about running a small design practice and explaining your work to clients. This is a US-based source; adapt business examples to your context and seek local advice for legal, tax or contract questions.
30X40 Design Workshop
The ninety-second drill
FreeOnce a week, record yourself explaining one design in ninety seconds to someone outside architecture. Review whether the purpose, main decision and trade-off are clear, then try again.
Do this one. It is the whole year.
Observe how experienced colleagues listen, explain a decision and discuss budget constraints. Practise those communication habits in your own presentations.
Choose one habit to start.
Sketch regularly, verify your research sources, or practise a short design explanation. Return to the other skill areas as your projects develop.
