How to turn home design ideas into a clear room brief

Saved a kitchen, bedroom or living room photo you love? The next step is to explain what you like, check what fits your room and separate essentials from extras. Use this brief before asking a designer or supplier for a proposal.

A reference image is a starting point. Your room dimensions, routine and budget shape the final plan.

1. Choose three references, then explain each one

A folder of twenty unrelated photos can make your priorities harder to understand. Start with three favourites from our room design galleries. Under each photo, write one sentence: “I like the light cabinets,” “I need this much storage,” or “I like how the dining area connects to the living room.”

Also note what you do not want. You may like a colour combination without wanting the same layout, material or furniture. A photograph alone does not confirm a product specification.

2. Record the room you actually have

Keep your available floor plan, room measurements, door and window positions, and clear photos together. Include the furniture or appliances you want to retain. Mark measurements that still need checking rather than guessing.

Kitchen: list appliances, cooking routines and storage needs. Compare kitchen layouts and colour ideas.
Bathroom: note existing fixtures and the changes you want. Explore bathroom design photos before discussing site feasibility with your team.
Bedroom: list bed size, study needs and belongings. View bedroom designs alongside wardrobe ideas.
Living room: decide how many people use the room daily and when guests visit. Compare seating and living room designs.

3. Divide your budget into clear inclusions

Compare written scopes, not just the final total. Ask each supplier to separate furniture, labour, hardware, finishes, electrical work, appliances, delivery and taxes. Record whether removal of existing items and site preparation are included.

4. Agree on three must-haves

Write your family’s three priorities before choosing finishes. For example: more accessible storage, a study corner and space for guests. Keep a separate “nice to have” list. This gives you a useful basis for discussing what to retain or simplify if a proposal exceeds your budget.

5. Use guidance to resolve specific decisions

Can I use a design photo without exact measurements?

Use it to communicate a preference. Confirm measurements before treating its furniture arrangement as a plan for your room.

Do I need a finished brief before the free team call?

No. The team call explains the process. The detailed form and project information are collected after payment in your WhatsApp group.

Can I request a supplier quote from a gallery estimate?

You can use the image as a reference, but ask for a fresh quote with dimensions, specifications and inclusions. A gallery estimate does not confirm today’s price for your project.
