Door buying guide for Indian homes

Choose a door that fits your home.

Start with the opening, daily movement and finish. Then compare the door, frame and hardware as one complete purchase.

Check the opening, the frame and the door swingConceptual front elevation at left shows a door leaf inside a frame and wall opening. A plan at right shows the leaf open and its curved swing path. Number one marks the wall opening, two the frame and leaf, and three the movement area. No dimensions or structural details are specified.123Front elevationPlan view

Different rooms ask different things of a door.

Main entrance

Consider access, privacy, weather exposure and the way visitors arrive. Coordinate the frame, locks, opening direction and any building requirements before choosing the finish.

Bedroom or internal room

Plan privacy and comfortable movement. Check that the open leaf and handle clear the bed, wardrobes, switches and circulation route.

Bathroom

Describe actual splash and moisture exposure to the supplier. Check the whole assembly—leaf edges, frame base, finish and hardware—and plan privacy and access with the room layout.

Balcony or exposed opening

Ask for a system suited to the site’s exposure. Compare glazing, seals, threshold and drainage details along with operation and service access.

Measure the opening. Specify the passage.

A leaf size is not the same as a wall opening or the space you can actually walk through. Get the final dimensions confirmed for the selected door system before ordering.

1. Record the site

Measure width, height and wall depth, and record floor and wall finishes still to come. Ask the installer to check level, plumb, support and fixing conditions.

2. Confirm the assembly

Get leaf and frame dimensions separately, including required installation allowances, architraves and threshold. Do not assume a quoted nominal size covers them all.

3. Check daily access

Confirm the usable clear opening with the door in use. Consider furniture deliveries, mobility needs, handles and the route on both sides.

Tall or wide doors need a system designed for that opening. Wall thickness alone does not establish a permissible door height.

Look beneath the finish.

Solid wood

Ask about species, seasoning, construction and suitability for the location. See a physical finish sample and understand ongoing care.

Flush and engineered cores

Ask what is inside: timber strips, tubular or honeycomb construction, or another specified core. Confirm face material, edge details and where locks and hinges can be fitted.

Steel and aluminium systems

Compare the complete construction, frame, coating and hardware. Do not assume all models share the same weather, acoustic, security or fire performance.

uPVC and WPC

These are different material families. Confirm the exact product, reinforcement or fixing requirements, intended exposure and finish; judge the selected system rather than a generic material claim.

Plan how it moves.

Hinged

Allow for the full swing, handle projection and a suitable stop. Coordinate the handing and opening direction before hardware preparation.

Sliding

Reserve space for panels to park or enter a pocket. Check tracks, seals, usable passage and access for future adjustment or replacement.

Folding

Check where the folded stack sits, how it affects the opening and where the handles land. Try the actual mechanism before finalizing.

An insect screen is a separate layer. Coordinate its track or folded mesh with the main door; it should not be confused with a security gate.

The original link currently selects a 30×84-inch Ember Pattern variant, different from the earlier 27×78-inch Charcoal Oak reference. The selected listing was unavailable when checked.

Confirm the exact size, finish, frame, hardware and installation inclusions. Do not order a leaf solely from the wall-opening measurement.

Make the finish feel connected.

Compare a physical door sample with your flooring, wall paint and nearby cabinetry. Check the face, edges, frame and architrave together in the room’s light.

For veneer, laminate, paint, polish or decorative grooves, specify the exact finish and maintenance instructions. Agree on the grain direction, gloss level, joints and edge treatment. For glass inserts, have the supplier confirm the glazing specification for the application rather than choosing by texture alone.

Ask for a complete installed quote.

  1. Leaf and frame: product code, core, thickness, dimensions, handing, jamb and architrave.
  2. Finish: both faces, edges, matching frame finish and approved physical sample.
  3. Hardware: hinges or runners, locks, handles, stops, seals and any closer or access feature.
  4. Compatibility: lock preparation, door thickness, hardware capacity and any permitted site trimming.
  5. Site work: transport, installation, fixing, making good, removal of an old frame and protection of finished surfaces.
  6. Evidence and service: written warranty terms, care instructions, local service, lead time and documentation for any required performance rating.

Check the working sample for comfortable operation. For a digital lock, include setup, power, emergency access and service arrangements in the discussion.

Questions before you order.

Which door brand is best for my home?

Shortlist by location, opening, finish, installation and service. Compare the exact quoted systems; brand names alone do not establish which door will work best at your site.

Is there one standard size I should order?

Do not order from a general width-and-height table. Have the opening checked after accounting for floor and wall finishes. The supplier should distinguish the leaf, frame, installation allowance and usable clear opening.

Can wall thickness tell me how tall the door can be?

Wall thickness alone is not enough. Coordinate the opening, support, fixing and selected door system with your project team before changing the wall or ordering a taller door.

Is a steel or WPC door automatically fire-rated?

A material description is not a fire rating for a complete door assembly. Where a rated door is needed, have your project professional confirm the applicable requirement and obtain documentation for the exact leaf, frame, hardware and installation.

Are flush and panel doors different materials?

These describe aspects of the door’s form or appearance. A flush door has flat faces; a panelled design has distinct panels or panel effects. Ask separately about the core, face material and finish.

Will a sliding door save space?

It avoids a conventional swing arc, but needs room for the moving and parked panels. Check the track or pocket, usable passage, handles, maintenance access and adjacent furniture.

How should I maintain the door?

Use the care instructions for the exact finish and hardware. Ask which cleaners and lubricants are permitted, and check seals, fasteners and moving parts at the recommended intervals.

Why does the Plantex link show a different door?

The original shopping link now selects a 30×84-inch Ember Pattern variant, rather than the 27×78-inch Charcoal Oak described previously. Confirm the selected size, finish and availability on the retailer page before ordering.
