Monday Live with Sourabh by HoumeIndia | 15 Jul 2024

This was a live session on interior design hosted by Sourabh from HoumeIndia. He started by addressing his absence the previous week due to health issues and expressed his hope that the viewers had a good couple of weeks. He then shared a personal update about his upcoming trip to Jaipur on July 22nd and 23rd, inviting viewers from the area to connect with him.

The session focused on common mistakes to avoid and tips for designing different areas of a home, including bedrooms and dining areas. He emphasized the importance of indirect lighting in bedrooms for a relaxing atmosphere and discussed the ideal dining table size and room dimensions for comfortable dining experiences.

Sourabh also touched upon recent videos he created on wardrobe design and chimney selection, encouraging viewers to check them out for detailed guidance. He then opened the floor for questions, addressing queries on sofa fabric selection, chimney specifications, and under-sink water purifiers.

The session concluded with a Q&A segment where viewers could ask questions directly. Sourabh discussed various topics, including the choice between cooktops and hobs, laminates and acrylics, and the importance of functionality in design. He also mentioned upcoming courses on Vastu Shastra and the launch of a community for designers and architects.

When choosing a sofa fabric, consider the texture and color. If you live in a warm climate, avoid thick fabrics like silk and opt for lighter options like cotton or linen. The color should complement the wall behind the sofa. If you have a dark wall, choose a light-colored sofa, and vice versa. Consider the overall theme of your home when selecting the sofa fabric
For Indian kitchens with three or four burner stoves, a chimney with a minimum suction power of 1200 and a size of at least 3 feet is recommended. The height of the chimney from the cooktop should not exceed 32 inches for optimal suction
Under-sink water purifiers are gaining popularity in Indian homes due to their trendy appeal. However, they require pre-planning for plumbing and drainage. If not planned in advance, installation can be difficult. Under-sink water purifiers are a good option for kitchens with drainboards or separate sinks for drinking water. AO Smith and Kent are recommended brands
Cooktops are a better solution for robust Indian cooking, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where servicing is difficult. Slim frame cooktops with tempered glass are available and easy to maintain. Hobs are suitable for dry kitchens or Tier 1 cities with better brand servicing and maintenance. Consider your long-term needs when choosing a hob, as upgrading from three to four burners later might not be possible. Sourabh prefers cooktops for 75% of his projects and hobs for 25%
Sourabh prefers laminates for budget-friendly homes and uses acrylics only in kitchens or upper cabinets. Acrylics are more reflective and suitable for smaller spaces where light play is desired. For most projects, laminates are preferred due to their variety, finish, ease of use, maintenance, and durability. It is recommended to use a minimum of 1mm laminate for furniture
The placement of doors and windows significantly impacts the functionality and aesthetics of a room. Doors should be positioned to allow for easy movement and access, while windows should be placed to maximize natural light and ventilation. The size and style of doors and windows should also complement the overall design of the room
Hiring an interior designer can be highly beneficial, especially when dealing with limited space or complex layouts. They can help optimize space utilization, suggest creative storage solutions, and ensure that the design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Interior designers can also help avoid costly mistakes and ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget
In bedrooms, avoid using too many direct lights, as they can create a harsh and unrelaxing atmosphere. Instead, opt for indirect lighting options like wall lights, floor lamps, and cove lighting. In dining areas, ensure that the dining table size is appropriate for the number of people using it, and leave enough space around the table for comfortable movement. The room dimensions should also be considered to ensure that the dining area does not feel cramped or overcrowded
Designers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities often face challenges such as limited access to resources, a smaller pool of clients, and a lack of awareness about the value of interior design. To overcome these challenges, designers can focus on building a strong online presence, networking with local businesses, and educating potential clients about the benefits of hiring a professional designer. They can also improve their design approach by staying updated on the latest trends and technologies and by focusing on creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet the specific needs of their clients
