Storage shaped around your day

Plan a wardrobe that works for you.

Start with what you store, how you reach it and the space your room can give.

Take stock before choosing a finish.

A wardrobe starts inside. List the items each person actually uses and the way they prefer to store them. Plan around that inventory rather than assumptions about gender or a standard division of shelves and hanging space.

What will it hold?

Separate long and short hanging clothes, folded items, accessories, bags, shoes and occasional-use belongings. Measure bulky pieces and the hangers you use.

Who needs access?

Note comfortable reach, shared areas and personal storage. Put everyday items where their user can reach them comfortably; plan children’s storage around safe, practical access.

What can the room fit?

Record the wall, ceiling, doors, windows, skirting and nearby furniture. Include the space to open shutters and drawers and move around them.

Choose the layout with the room in mind.

Hinged shutters

Draw the door swing alongside the bed and other furniture. Check that an open shutter allows the intended drawers or pull-outs to operate.

Sliding shutters

Check how the panels overlap and which part of the interior is accessible at one time. Match drawer positions and usable depth to the chosen track system.

Walk-in storage

Plan the circulation area as well as the cabinets. Review corners, dressing space, lighting and the reach to each storage zone.

These are planning considerations, not fixed size recommendations. Use measured drawings and the selected hardware’s documentation.

Five details worth settling early.

1. Give each storage zone a purpose.

Use the inventory to decide how much hanging, shelf and drawer space you need. Test the position of everyday items and leave occasional storage for belongings you use less often. Adjustable shelves can offer flexibility where the cabinet design supports them.

2. Make corners reachable.

A corner adds value only if its contents are accessible. Compare a simple shelf or hanging arrangement with a corner accessory, then check its opening, operating space and compatibility. Do not count an awkward, inaccessible corner as useful storage just because it appears on the plan.

3. Plan mirrors as part of the layout.

Choose where you will stand and how the light reaches you. A shutter-mounted mirror changes the shutter specification; confirm its weight, fixing and hardware requirements. An internal mirror must be usable when the wardrobe is open.

4. Specify the shutter and hardware together.

Blockboard is one possible material, not a guarantee against bending or operating problems. Ask for the exact board, thickness, finish, edge treatment, panel size and hardware specification, with warranty conditions. Check compatibility rather than choosing by material name alone.

For example, Blum’s hinge-planning guidance relates hinge selection to front weight and height and states limits for its reference chart. Use the instructions for the actual system selected for your wardrobe.

5. Add accessories that solve a real need.

A laundry basket, accessory tray, pull-out ironing board or hanging system should earn its space. Check usable capacity, opening room, access for maintenance and replacement availability. Follow the chosen product’s instructions, including requirements for any powered accessory.

Ask for a drawing and an itemized quotation.

  • Overall wardrobe dimensions, usable internal dimensions, and the arrangement behind each shutter.
  • Shutter movement, drawer extension, and the relationship with the bed, doors and other furniture.
  • Specified board, finish, edges, back panel, handles, hinges or tracks, and accessory model codes.
  • Lighting or electrical work, where included, and how it can be maintained.
  • Delivery, installation, site work, taxes, exclusions, warranty and after-sales support.

To manage the budget, separate essential storage from optional accessories and decorative upgrades. Compare quotations against the same agreed specification.

The existing Houme India guide includes sliding and hinged wardrobe examples, interior views and a walk-in layout. Use it to discuss storage arrangements and finishes.

Its dimensions belong to those examples. Some drawings are explicitly marked “Not for site”; do not use the PDF as a construction drawing for your room.

The original dated resources are retained. Use the current written planning guidance above when considering specifications.

Before you finalize the wardrobe.

Is there one ideal internal layout?

No. Count and measure what you store, then divide hanging, folded and drawer space around the people using it. The illustration is a starting point, not a universal layout.

Will sliding doors always save space?

They do not swing into the room, but their track, overlapping panels and access requirements still affect the design. Check the exact system and drawer arrangement against your room plan.

Should every wardrobe go up to the ceiling?

Review the ceiling conditions, installation, comfortable access and what you would store in the upper area. More enclosed volume is useful only when it serves your needs.

How can I control the cost?

Agree on the storage essentials first. Compare the same materials and hardware across quotations, then decide which accessories and finish upgrades are worthwhile. A price without a matching specification is difficult to compare.

Can I copy a PDF design into my room?

Use it as a reference for a measured design discussion. Your room, belongings, panel construction and hardware need their own checks before manufacture or installation.
